Apple testing automatic audio switching for third-party accessories in the EU

As part of its ongoing efforts to align with the European Union’s Digital Markets Act (DMA), Apple is currently testing a new framework designed to enable automatic audio switching for third-party audio accessories. This innovative feature aims to enhance the experience of users by allowing their devices to intelligently manage audio based on whether a third-party accessory is in use.

Expanding Third-Party Accessory Integration

According to a recently released support document, Apple has introduced a framework known as AudioAccessoryKit. This framework will allow third-party accessory manufacturers to share headphone data with the operating system, facilitating automatic audio switching capabilities similar to those currently available for Apple’s own AirPods.

In practical terms, this means that iOS devices will be able to detect when a user is wearing a compatible third-party accessory and will automatically switch audio output accordingly. This feature is expected to provide a seamless audio experience for users who frequently switch between different audio devices.

However, it is important to note that the feature is still in the testing phase and is not yet available for general release. Currently, it is limited to developers and users within the European Union. As stated in the support document, this framework is specifically designed for iPhone and iPad devices.

Developers looking to utilize the AudioAccessoryKit can develop and test their applications on devices located in any region, but the final customer installations will only work on devices in the EU that are registered with an Apple Account from an EU country or region.

To implement this feature, accessory developers will need to pair their products using another framework called AccessorySetupKit. Once paired, they will register their accessory with AudioAccessoryKit and specify which features it supports, including automatic audio switching and placement detection.

The responsibility of notifying the system about user interactions, such as putting on or taking off headphones, will lie with the companion app of the accessory. This app will report these events to the system, enabling iOS to reroute audio appropriately based on the user's actions.

Additionally, the framework allows Bluetooth accessories to report which devices they are connected to. This capability will assist the system in determining the correct audio source when multiple devices are in use simultaneously, thereby enhancing the overall user experience.

At present, the support document indicates that AudioAccessoryKit and its associated APIs are compatible with iOS version 26.4 or later, as well as iPadOS version 26.4 or later. Developers interested in learning more about the new framework and its capabilities are encouraged to refer to the additional resources provided by Apple.

What’s Next for Third-Party Accessories?

The introduction of automatic audio switching for third-party accessories marks a significant step in Apple’s commitment to enhancing interoperability within its ecosystem, particularly in compliance with regulatory requirements. As the testing phase progresses, it will be interesting to see how developers respond and the types of innovative audio accessories that emerge from this new framework.
