Apple is reportedly developing a second-generation iPhone Air, aiming to address several key limitations of the current model. The original iPhone Air, launched with a sleek ultra-thin design, faced lower-than-expected sales due to compromises such as a single camera and modest battery life. Now, multiple sources suggest that the iPhone Air 2 will bring substantial improvements, including a dual-camera setup, a next-generation processor, and advanced thermal management. Here’s everything we know so far about the upcoming device.

Will there be an iPhone Air 2?

The iPhone Air, despite its innovative form factor, reportedly sold below Apple’s initial projections. In November, The Information reported that Apple had indefinitely delayed the development of a second-generation model, citing disappointing sales figures. The report claimed Apple notified engineers and suppliers that the next iPhone Air had been taken off the schedule without a new release date. However, shortly thereafter, the same publication updated its story, indicating that Apple had not canceled the project entirely and that development was still ongoing. This aligns with other industry watchers who believe Apple remains committed to the ultra-thin line but is taking extra time to refine the product.

The delay is not entirely surprising. Apple often adjusts its product roadmap based on market reception. The first iPhone Air was praised for its thinness and light weight but criticized for missing features such as a second camera and a larger battery. With the iPhone Air 2, Apple seems to be addressing these pain points while retaining the distinctive slim profile. The new model is expected to debut in spring 2027 alongside the base iPhone 18, giving the company more than a year to finalize its design and supply chain.

A second camera

One of the most significant tradeoffs of the original iPhone Air was its single rear camera. The iPhone Air 2 is expected to change this by adding a secondary camera. According to reports from Bloomberg and The Information, the new model will feature an ultra-wide-angle lens alongside the main camera. This would bring the camera system in line with Apple’s base model iPhones, which have offered a main plus ultra-wide combination for years. The addition of an ultra-wide camera will allow users to capture wider scenes without stitching photos together, making the device more versatile for photography enthusiasts.

However, a telephoto camera is not expected, meaning the iPhone Air 2 will lack optical zoom beyond the main sensor. This decision likely stems from space constraints inside the ultra-thin chassis. Nonetheless, the dual-camera setup is a major upgrade over the single lens of its predecessor and will likely improve low-light performance and computational photography capabilities. Apple may also introduce software enhancements such as improved Smart HDR and Night mode to leverage the additional sensor.

A20 Pro chip

Under the hood, the iPhone Air 2 is said to be powered by the A20 Pro processor, a significant leap from the A19 Pro chip used in the current model. The A20 Pro will be Apple’s first 2-nanometer iPhone processor, fabricated using advanced technology that offers higher transistor density, better power efficiency, and improved performance. Compared to the 3nm process of the A19 Pro, the 2nm node is expected to deliver a 10-15% performance boost while consuming less power.

Additionally, the chip will incorporate a new packaging technique called Wafer-Level Multi-Chip Module (WLMCM). This technology integrates the system-on-a-chip (SoC) and DRAM at the wafer level, reducing latency and energy consumption. The result is a processor that can handle intensive tasks like gaming or video editing more efficiently, especially important for a device with limited internal space for heat dissipation. The A20 Pro will also support the latest machine learning capabilities, enabling faster on-device AI processing for features like improved photo editing and voice recognition.

Better battery life

Battery life was a major concern for the first iPhone Air, which packed a 3,149mAh cell. Leaks from the supply chain indicate that the iPhone Air 2 will feature a 3,500mAh battery, an increase of over 10%. This larger capacity, combined with the efficiency gains of the A20 Pro chip, could result in significantly longer usage times. Apple is also reportedly working on more energy-dense battery chemistry to maximize capacity without increasing size. While exact runtimes remain unknown, the combination of a bigger battery and a more efficient processor should allow the iPhone Air 2 to match or exceed the battery life of standard iPhone models.

However, real-world performance will depend on many factors, including display brightness, network usage, and background app activity. Users can expect Apple to optimize iOS 19 (or whatever version ships with the device) to take full advantage of the hardware improvements. The iPhone Air 2’s thin design may still limit the physical battery size, but the shift to a 2nm chip should offset some of the constraints.

Vapor chamber

One of the most interesting additions is a vapor chamber cooling system. According to The Information, the iPhone Air 2 will use this technology, which Apple first introduced in the iPhone 17 Pro. Vapor chambers are flat, sealed containers that use liquid vaporization and condensation to spread heat away from hot components. In smartphones, they help maintain peak performance during prolonged usage, such as gaming or video editing, by preventing thermal throttling. For a device as thin as the iPhone Air, efficient cooling is critical because there is less space for traditional heat sinks.

The vapor chamber in the iPhone Air 2 is expected to work in tandem with a graphite thermal pad to transfer heat from the A20 Pro chip to the frame. This setup should allow the phone to sustain high clock speeds longer than the original iPhone Air, which may have struggled with heat dissipation in demanding tasks. The improvement could also extend battery life by reducing the need for active thermal management. While vapor chambers have been used in Android flagships for years, Apple’s implementation is anticipated to be finely tuned for its custom silicon.

iPhone Air 2: Release date

The iPhone Air 2 was initially expected to launch in September 2026 alongside the iPhone 18 Pro lineup. However, recent reports from Bloomberg indicate that Apple has shifted the release to spring 2027, paired with the base model iPhone 18. This delay gives Apple additional time to refine the design, improve yields for the 2nm chip, and ensure the supply chain can meet demand. By launching in spring, the iPhone Air 2 would break from Apple’s traditional fall schedule, suggesting a strategic move to spread out product releases.

Apple’s decision to align the iPhone Air 2 with the base iPhone 18 also hints at shared components, such as the A20 camera module and display technology, which could help reduce costs. As the ultra-thin market niche grows, Apple may aim to position the iPhone Air as a stylish alternative to the standard and Pro models, targeting users who prioritize portability and design over raw performance. Whether the improvements will be enough to attract buyers remains to be seen, but the iPhone Air 2 is shaping up to be a compelling upgrade with its dual camera, advanced chip, and better cooling.
