Apple Vision Pro: A New Era of Spatial Computing

Apple Vision Pro, launched in February 2024 and refreshed with an M5 chip in October 2025, is Apple's first spatial computer. It is a mixed reality headset that overlays augmented reality content on the real world through cameras, and can switch to fully immersive virtual reality. Priced at $3,500, it is a premium device aimed at early adopters and professionals.

Key Facts and Features

Design and Comfort

The Vision Pro resembles ski goggles with a laminated glass front and aluminum alloy frame. It includes a Light Seal that blocks light and a Dual Knit Band (introduced with M5 version) that has a second strap over the head for better weight distribution. The headset weighs over 1.3 pounds and uses an external battery pack providing up to 3 hours of video playback.

Display and Performance

Two micro-OLED displays deliver over 4K resolution per eye (23 million pixels total). The M5 chip (10-core CPU, 10-core GPU) improves pixel rendering by 10% and supports up to 120Hz refresh rates. The R1 chip handles camera and sensor data with 12-millisecond latency. Storage options: 256GB, 512GB, 1TB. RAM: 16GB.

Interaction and Navigation

No physical controllers; navigation uses eye tracking, hand gestures, and voice commands. Optic ID scans the iris for authentication. A Digital Crown adjusts immersion levels. Bluetooth accessories like keyboards, mice, and game controllers are supported.

Cameras and Sensors

Twelve cameras and five sensors enable hand tracking, spatial mapping, and 3D photo/video capture. The 3D camera captures spatial videos and photos. EyeSight display shows the user's eyes to others to indicate immersion mode.

Audio

Built-in speakers with spatial audio, plus six microphones. Supports AirPods Pro 2 and AirPods Pro 3 for lossless audio.

Connectivity

Wi-Fi 6 (no Wi-Fi 6E), Bluetooth 5.3.

Battery Life

Up to 2.5 hours general use, 3 hours video. External battery pack worn at hip or plugged into power adapter.

visionOS Operating System

Runs visionOS with dedicated App Store and support for iPhone/iPad apps. visionOS 26 added persistent widgets and improved Personas. visionOS 27 introduces Siri AI with generative capabilities, Visual Intelligence, Image Playground, and enhanced Safari. Mac Virtual Display allows using Vision Pro as a 4K external display.

Should You Buy?

The Vision Pro is excellent for watching movies, viewing 3D content, and Mac display, but has limited app selection and heavy weight. Users should try it at an Apple Store before purchase. The M5 refresh makes now a good time to buy, as next-generation headset development is paused for at least two years.

What's Next?

Apple is focusing on smart glasses without a display, expected in 2026-2027, and AR glasses with display by 2028. A cheaper enclosed headset may arrive later. The Vision Pro line may not see a direct successor soon.
